One gentle rule
Do not try to fix everything in one conversation. Help them feel less alone, ask about safety when needed, and offer one concrete next step.

Start with words that reduce shame
Try: βI am glad you told me.β βYou do not have to explain it perfectly.β βI am not disappointed in you.β βAre you safe right now?β
Offer one concrete help
Specific offers are easier to accept than vague ones. Try offering food, a ride, help finding a counselor, a check-in call, or quiet company.
Do not carry it alone
Supporters need support too. A wise counselor, pastor, friend, or local emergency resource may need to be part of the care circle.
