Bible Verses for Depression: Scriptures for Depressed Christians

When you are depressed, Bible verses can feel complicated. Sometimes they comfort you. Sometimes they feel flat. Sometimes they make you feel worse because you think you should be feeling more than you do.

So this page is not a test of your faith. It is a quiet place to borrow words when you do not have many.

Quick Answer

The Bible does not ignore depression, sorrow, exhaustion, numbness, or despair. Scripture gives honest language for lament and gentle reminders that God stays near to the brokenhearted, not only to those who are doing well.

Bible verse for someone who is depressed

A gentle verse to send is Psalm 34:18: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

You might send it with: “I do not need you to feel better right away. I just want you to know I am here, and I love you.”

Bible verses for someone who is depressed

If you are sending a verse to someone else, keep it gentle. A verse plus one sentence of presence is usually better than a long explanation.

The goal is not to make them explain why they are struggling. The goal is to remind them that they are not alone in it.

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Psalm 34:18

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:28

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.

Isaiah 43:2

The Spirit helps us in our weakness.

Romans 8:26

Bible verses when you feel numb

Numbness is not spiritual failure. Sometimes the body and soul go quiet when the weight has been too much for too long.

You do not have to force a feeling before God is allowed to be near. Numb is not the same as faithless.

Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and body with grief.

Psalm 31:9

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?

Psalm 139:7-8

Yet you are near, Lord, and all your commands are true.

Psalm 119:151

Nothing in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God.

Romans 8:39

Bible verses when hope feels very small

Hope may not feel like a sunrise today. It may feel like drinking water, texting one safe person, or staying present for the next hour.

Scripture can be near you, but it should not be the only support you have when the day feels unsafe or too heavy to carry alone.

Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.

Lamentations 3:22-23

Nothing in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:38-39

Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God.

Psalm 42:11

My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.

2 Corinthians 12:9

Bible verses when God feels far away

The Bible includes prayers from people who felt abandoned, confused, and unheard. You are not disqualified from faith because God feels distant.

Psalm 22 begins with distance. Psalm 88 does not end with a neat bow. God gave us prayers for moments that do not resolve quickly.

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Psalm 22:1

He has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has listened to his cry for help.

Psalm 22:24

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

Psalm 46:1

The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you.

Deuteronomy 31:8

Bible verses when you are exhausted

Exhaustion can make everything feel spiritual, physical, and emotional at the same time. Scripture does not shame creaturely limits.

Sometimes the most faithful next step is rest, food, water, help, or telling the truth to someone safe.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:28

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.

Psalm 23:2-3

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.

Isaiah 40:29

Get up and eat.

1 Kings 19:5-6

Bible verses for anxiety and depression together

Anxiety and depression can pull in opposite directions: racing thoughts and no energy, fear and numbness, urgency and shutdown.

Use these verses gently. They are not a scolding. They are an invitation to be met by God while your body is having a hard day.

Present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds.

Philippians 4:6-7

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

1 Peter 5:7

When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.

Psalm 94:19

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.

John 14:27

Psalms of lament for depression

The Psalms make room for grief, confusion, anger, and honest desperation. If you cannot read a whole chapter, one verse is enough.

  • Psalm 13, when the question is “How long?”
  • Psalm 22, honest desolation.
  • Psalm 23, rest and being led gently.
  • Psalm 34, God near the brokenhearted.
  • Psalm 42, longing and discouragement.
  • Psalm 88, grief without quick resolution.
  • Psalm 139, God’s presence in the depths.

Common Questions About Bible Verses and Depression

What Bible verse can I send to someone who is depressed?

Psalm 34:18 is a gentle place to start: The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Send it with a short note that does not pressure them to feel better immediately.

Are there Bible verses specifically for depression?

Yes. The Bible does not ignore grief, despair, numbness, exhaustion, or emotional suffering. The Psalms in particular give language for lament, sorrow, heaviness, and the feeling that God is far away.

Why do Bible verses sometimes feel hollow when I am depressed?

Depression can affect how encouragement and truth feel in the moment. Words that usually comfort may feel flat or disconnected. That is not a sign that your faith is failing. Be patient with yourself.

Are these verses meant to replace professional care?

No. Scripture and encouragement are not a substitute for medical, therapeutic, pastoral, emergency, or crisis care. If depression is affecting your safety, daily function, or ability to keep going, reach out for real-time and professional support.

What Psalm is good for depression?

Psalm 34:18, Psalm 42, Psalm 13, Psalm 23, Psalm 46, Psalm 88, and Psalm 139 are common starting places. Some are comforting and some are brutally honest. Both can belong.

What if I am too depressed to read the Bible?

Read less, not more. One verse, one phrase, listening to Scripture, or letting someone else read to you can be enough for a low-capacity day.

Still Here Faith offers Christian encouragement and resource navigation, not medical advice, diagnosis, treatment, pastoral counseling, crisis care, or emergency care. If you are in immediate danger, call emergency services, call or text 988 in the U.S., or text HOME to 741741.
