Shame-Free Faith
Does God Love Me If I’m Depressed?
Depression can make God feel far away. It can also make you wonder whether your pain has changed how God sees you.
Last updated: May 2026
Quick Answer
Yes, God’s love is not canceled by depression. Feeling numb, exhausted, or sad does not mean you are unloved, unsaved, or abandoned. Depression changes what you can feel. It does not change God’s character.
What this page covers:
- Why depression can distort love
- Why feelings are not the whole truth
- How to receive care without shame
- One tiny reminder
Depression can make love hard to feel
When you are depressed, affection, hope, prayer, and reassurance may not land the way they used to. That does not mean they are false. It may mean your body and mind are exhausted.
God’s love is not based on your capacity
You are not loved because you can pray well, feel deeply, serve consistently, or stay emotionally strong. Christian faith rests on God’s mercy, not your emotional performance.
You are allowed to need care
Being loved by God does not mean you will never need therapy, medication, medical care, pastoral care, or help from others. Love does not remove the need for support. Love often sends support.
A small truth for today
You may not be able to feel loved today. You can still borrow this sentence: I am loved even when I cannot feel it.
One tiny next step
Write this somewhere visible: God’s love is not measured by what I can feel today.
