Spiritual Numbness
God Feels Far Away
Few things feel more painful than still believing in God while feeling like He is far away.
Quick Answer
When God feels far away, it does not automatically mean He has left you or that your faith has failed. Depression, anxiety, grief, and exhaustion can make God’s nearness hard to feel.
What this page covers:
- Why God can feel far away
- What not to assume
- One gentle next step
A gentle note: Still Here Faith offers Christian encouragement and resource navigation, not medical advice, diagnosis, treatment, pastoral counseling, crisis care, or emergency care.
If you are in immediate danger or thinking about harming yourself, call emergency services, call or text 988 in the U.S., or text HOME to 741741. Therapy, medication, pastoral care, and medical support can all be part of faithful care.
Do not turn distance into condemnation
The feeling of distance is real, but it is not the final authority on whether God is near. Many faithful people in Scripture cried out from places of silence, fear, and confusion.
Stay small
When God feels far away, big spiritual goals can feel impossible. Try one tiny prayer, one Psalm, one walk, or one honest text to a safe person.
One tiny next step
Say: God, I cannot feel You clearly, but I am still here. Help me stay near enough for today.
